Nicki Minaj Stands With T&T, Tells Michael B Jordan: “Change J’ouvert Rum Name”

By Newsroom

Rapper Nicki Minaj has never shied away from speaking out on matters involving Trinidad and Tobago- and she doesn’t plan on starting now.

The 38 year old rapper, who was born in Trinidad before moving to the United States as a child, took to her Instagram on Tuesday to share her thoughts on the controversy surrounding American actor Michael B. Jordan and his recently debuted J’ouvert Rum.

“I’m sure MBJ didn’t intentionally do anything he thought Caribbean ppl would find offensive— but now that you are aware, change the name & continue to flourish & prosper,” Minaj posted.

Jordan has been facing heavy criticism online since the launch was unveiled on Sunday night and has been accused of cultural appropriation- with many likening him to his Black Panther character Erik Killmonger- villainised for his colonizer traits.

Since the launch, Jordan and his business partner, who is said to have Trinbagonian roots, have not responded to the public outrage.

Angostura Limited, which has featured products in the launch, has also not spoken on the matter publicly.
