NJAC On Protests: “Fire The Officers Under Investigation”

By Newsroom

The National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) has added its voice to the chorus of people calling for the immediate suspension of the police
officers involved in the shooting of three men at Juman’s Drive, Second Caledonia Morvant last Saturday.

In a statement on Thursday, NJAC said it believes that contrary to what has been recently expressed by the
Commissioner of Police, the suspension of the officers should not be determined by the number
of officers involved, but rather based on principle and process.

“Such action would ensure that the
investigative process is transparent and would engender more confidence by the public in the
process. As it is often times said, justice must not only be done, but also appear to be done,” it said.

On Wednesday, Top Cop Gary Griffith said he would not make any decisive action on the officers until both the TTPS and Police Complaints Authority have completed investigations.

NJAC also calls for urgent amendment to the Police Complaints Authority Act in order to
increase the effectiveness and authority of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA).

In a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, too, lamented the poor track record of the PCA, however urged citizens to await the outcome of the investigation. “To call for immediate action without the evidence is to call for revenge as against justice. I believe those who are calling for justice are completely correct and I find common cause with them in that. Those who are demanding revenge- I warn against that approach,” he said.
