No $1M Compensation For Officers Who Die From Covid-19, Special Insurance Policy In The Works

Family members of police officers who die from Covid-19 will not benefit from the $1million dollar compensation afforded to officers who have died while in the line of duty.

This is according to Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, who told the House of Representatives on Friday afternoon that this compensation applies only to circumstances directly linked to police work.

“For example, Madame speaker, police officers who are shot and killed or attacked by criminals or in hot pursuit while on duty. Officers who died from Covid-19 would not fall into this category,” the PM stated.

He however revealed that the Ministry of National Security will liase with the Commissioner of Police to create a special insurance policy to treat with the circumstance.

Asked by Couva South MP whether the Ministry of National Security was considering engaging the Police Social & Welfare Association to discuss the possibility of a risk allowane, the Prime Minister said he understands the matter is receiving the attention of Police Commissioner Gary Griffith at this time and as such, he could not comment further at this time. 

To date, a total of 12 police officers have died from Covid-19. 

At present, 147 officers have contracted the virus and another 404 are in isolation.
