Off duty police officer foils robbery in Trincity

Quick work by an off duty police officer resulted in a 31-year-old man from Carenage being arrested following an attempted robbery.

According to police accounts of the incident, the officer, who is attached to the Police Academy Guard Unit sprang into action after he observed an attempted armed robbery. The incident happened around 2:25 pm yesterday, March 18.

The police report stated that a man exited a bank, located along Trincity Central Road, Trincity, when he was accosted by three men, one allegedly with a firearm, who announced a robbery.

“The victim became fearful and was relieved of his wallet containing a quantity of cash, personal documents, a mobile phone and jewellery. PC Augustus observed the incident and called out to the men, who then ran into a white Nissan Tiida motor vehicle. One of the suspects then pointed a firearm in the direction of the police officer, who heard a loud explosion. The officer recognized the threat to his life and in line with the “Use of Force” Policy, drew his licensed firearm and discharged several rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition in the direction of the suspect.

“The suspects attempted to escape, however, the vehicle collided with the pavement and the men exited and ran off. Homicide Region 2 Officers responded to the report, then mounted a search which led to the arrest of one of the suspects. The scene was processed, photographs were captured and certain stolen items were recovered.”
