By Newsroom

According to the TTPS, a Curepe man was granted own bail of $95,000 by a Master of the High Court, after being charged with two counts of Uttering a Forged Document and two counts of Possession of Forged Documents.

KAVIR MAHARAJ, 23, an office clerk, was charged with the offences when he appeared before Master Shabiki Cazabon on Monday, November 4, 2024.

The Sufficiency Hearing date was set for July 22nd, 2025, and the accused is to report to the St. Joseph Police Station once a month. It is alleged that on Friday, November 1, 2024, Licensing Officers were conducting a roadblock exercise along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, in the Curepe district, when they stopped a man driving a Nissan AD Wagon, for the offence of Driving a Vehicle with a Non-Prescribed Tint.

The officers asked the driver if he had authorisation from the Licensing Division for the said vehicle to be tinted, to which he allegedly replied ‘yes’. The suspect then allegedly produced two documents, namely a Ministry of Works and Transport Division Exemption Certificate and
a Tint Window Exemption in his name, both purportedly emanating from the Licensing Division.

The documents were accepted as genuine, however, on further examination, they were deemed fraudulent. The man and the vehicle were escorted to the Licensing Office, Caroni, and checks confirmed that the documents were indeed fraudulent.

The Fraud Squad was contacted and an investigation was launched, spearheaded by W/Snr. Supt. (Ag.) Phillips, coordinated by Supt. Lutchman and ASP (Ag.) Davidson, and supervised by Insp. Francis, Sgt. Toney and Cpl Cummings and included PCs Khan and Belfast.

As a result of the investigation, PC Khan charged Maharaj with the four offences. The Fraud Squad, which works closely alongside the Licensing Division on these investigations reminds members of the public that altering or forging any official document and using the same to gain
an advantage is a criminal offence and will not go unnoticed or unprosecuted.
