Opposition: Faris, AG Must Be Held Accountable As Accused In Naipaul Murder Case File Wrongful Prosecution

By Newsroom

The Opposition UNC says Attorney General Reginald Armour and former AG Faris Al Rawi must must be held to account for the failure by the State to challenge the charge of malicious prosecution in the Vindra  Naipaul-Coolman murder trial.

It follows a court order on Monday awarding each of the nine accused a payout of $2million.

“Why did Al-Rawi and Armour not file a Defence to defend the state against this claim of malicious prosecution? Almost 8 months had passed since the claim was filed until Justice Joan Charles was forced to grant judgment in default of Defence. Were Al-Rawi and Armour asleep at the wheel for 8 months?” the Opposition asked in a statement on Tuesday.

It further stated: “Having not filed a Defence, why did Al-Rawi and Armour not file any evidence to oppose this multi-million-dollar Assessment of Damages? To not file a Defence is one thing but to not file any evidence in opposition to the claim for damages takes even Al-Rawi and Armour’s incompetence to a mind-bogglingly new level.”

Meanwhile, earlier on Tuesday, Acting Attorney General Stuart Young ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the State’s failure to file a Defence in a civil action claiming malicious prosecution which was brought by nine former accused.

The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs will be addressing this matter tomorrow at a press conference, when AG Reginald Armour is set to return from abroad.
