Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar proposes several recommendations to Government to help fight Covid-19

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has called on the Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley to drop the price on certain grocery items to help families who cannot afford them because of layoffs. Following her meeting with Dr. Rowley today, she announced during a press conference that she called on the PM to drop the price of flour, oil and rice.

Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar said she suggested cost cuts on the products of National Flour Mills could help during this time. She also suggested that a as much as 5000 workers from casinos may soon be on the breadline.

She also called on government to reconsider laws that restrict citizens movements. She said even though she understands the need for it, she believes that it should be done through proper legislation.

Mrs. Persad-Bissessar also questioned the withdrawal proposed from the Heriatge and Stabilisation Fund and added that after listening to Dr. Rowley’s press conference she is not sure if the $6 billion which is to be used for the funding of the economy during the pandemic is coming from that fund.

Another recommendation put forward was the use of an app created by the National Youth Arm of the UNC to help with teaching SEA to students currently at home preparing for the exam. She also suggested a five pillar system which included protecting society and rebuilding following the pandemic.
