Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar Claims Privy Council Victory

By Shirvan Williams

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has called on the government to immediately hold the local government elections. Her remarks came following the Privy Council’s landmark judgment that the extension of the term of office of councillors and aldermen as contained in the Local Government Amendment Act, 2022, did not apply to the current councillors and aldermen. Ms Persad- Bissessar described the judgement as a “red-letter day” in the political history of Trinidad and Tobago.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Reginald Armour, SC, has said that the while the matter was being actively considered by the government the decision to call fresh Local Government Elections, ultimately remains with PM, Dr Keith Rowley.
