Opposition Writes To House Speaker About Covid Concerns Following PM’s Diagnosis

By Newsroom

Opposition Chief Whip Dr. David Lee has written to House Speaker Brigid Anisette-George ahead of this afternoon’s Parliamentary sitting, to voice the party’s concern as it relates  to the Prime Minister’s recent Covid-19 diagnosis.

Lee noted that several government MPs interacted with the Prime Minister during the 14-day incubation period for the virus, and questioned what protocols were in place to avoid a spread to those required to be in the House this afternoon.

“It must be further noted that not only did the Prime Minister attend the Parliamentary sitting of March 26th where he interacted with those Members seated close to him, but he has been seen in public with his other colleagues such as with the Minister of Health at a press conference on March 27th, at a function with the Minister of Energy on March 24th as well as a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs on March 25th. All of these interactions fall within the 14 day incubation period of the COVID-19 virus,” Lee said in a statement.

The Prime Minister tested positive for the virus on Easter Monday (April 5th). His diagnosis was announced via the Office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday morning.

“There is urgent need for assurance that all steps are being taken to ensure that Members who may have come into contact with the Prime Minister, either primary or secondary, will adhere to the Health regulations to prevent any outbreak within our Parliament.

We therefore seek your guidance on the measures being enacted to mitigate the severe risks posed to all attending the upcoming sitting,” Lee said.

The Anti-Gang Bill is scheduled to go to the House of Representatives for debate this afternoon, after being passed in the Senate last month.
