Passenger arriving from Trinidad charged with drug trafficking in Hong Kong

A 33-year-old male passenger who arrived in ​Hong Kong from Trinidad and Tobago was detained by Customs authorities there on August 24 after they seized about 3.4 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $2.9 million at Hong Kong International Airport.

According to a release from www.info.gov.hk the find was made during customs clearance when the batch of suspected cocaine was found concealed inside the false compartments of his checked-in suitcase. The man was then arrested.

He has since been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and was scheduled to appear at West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on August 25.

There has been no word yet on if he was sentenced. According to the site, under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
