PM Dismisses Nepotism Claim: “President Had No Say In Senior Counsel Picks”

By Newsroom

Responding to the Opposition’s grouse with the President’s husband and brother being appointed Senior Counsel, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley denied that both men were included because of their familial relation to Her Excellency.

Dr. Rowley told a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, there is a set criterion for selection of attorneys to be appointed senior counsel, including professional distinction and individual integrity.

He also reminded that per the Constitution, the President has no say in who is selected.

The Prime Minister’s statement came in response to  Opposition MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal’s assertion that it is “passing strange” that the President’s husband and brother be appointed Senior Counsel status.

At a UNC meeting in Fyzabad last night, Moonilal said as deserving as both men may be of the honor, the issue of nepotism and favoritism are real issues.
