PM Reveals $1.6B Plans To Transform San Fernando

By Newsroom

Government is forecast to spend some $1.6 billion on upgrades in San Fernando over the next four to five years.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says the plan for further investment is meant to boost the city which has been feeling the economic impact of the restructuring of Petrotrin.

“Granting San Fernando that expenditure was not accidental. It was because we recognised that the restructuring of Petrotrin would have had a negative effect on San Fernando and the wider community. We had to do something in the San Fernando district so that those who were negatively affected had some kind of relief,” he said.

“I dare tell you that I look forward to the next four to five years in San Fernando, where you will not recognise the city as it grows as one of the fastest in this country,” he added.

The Prime Minister was speaking as he attended the opening of the New Skinner Park on Monday, completed at a price tag of $131 million.

The multi-purpose venue, completed just in time for Calypso Fiesta this Saturday, can hold 6000 patrons and boasts of a long list of amenities including a new football field and cycling track, dining areas, a car park area, and VIP box.
