PM Rowley Hints At Possibility Of Vaccination ‘Safe Zones’ For Gyms, Bars To Resume Operation

By Newsroom

If the Covid-19 trends remain on course and there is an increase in the number of people getting vaccinated, there’s a possibility that some more business activity can restart.

Introducing the concept of a ‘safe zone’ which has been implemented in some parts of the world, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says this could allow the vaccinated population to participate at gyms, cinemas, casinos and bars. In-house dining will also be included in the grouping.

This was one of the possibilities discussed at Cabinet’s three-day retreat which was held from Wednesday to Friday at Blenheim House in Tobago.

Dr. Rowley pointed out, however, that even this step will be approached with caution.

“But we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. Because even if we do open those businesses… I don’t anticipate that at that time, early October, that we will be encouraging party type events. We will still have to not congregate, right? Because it is the congregating that leads to the spread,” the PM said.

PM Rowley: “The Faster We Get Vaccinated, The Better We Are”

Dr. Rowley says Trinidad and Tobago’s statistics are mirroring global trends, which shows that the vaccinated population who end up contracting Covid-19, rarely require hospital care.

Using the UK as an example, Dr. Rowley noted that while the infection rate there is still high, the hospital system is fairly stable, given the high percentage of the population is vaccinated.
