Police Seize Over Five Million in Marijuana in St James

The TTPS has disclosed that Western Division officers have seized $5.5 million worth of marijuana during an anti-crime exercise conducted in St James early this morning, February 29.

According to the TTPS:

The seizure is part of the overall strategy by Senior Superintendent Sean Henry to increase the attack on all forms of criminal activity in the wake of the recent murders in the Maraval district. Snr Supt Henry stated, “This exercise is part of ongoing and aggressive anti-crime initiatives in the Western Division, we will continue our aggressive and relentless attack on the criminals and criminality, with a view to delivering on our mandate to ensure that the Western Division remains a safe place. I will also continue to encourage and employ persons to cooperate and collaborate with us in our efforts to ensure our communities are safe.”

According to police reports, around 3:45 am on Thursday 29th February 2024, members of the St. James Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and personnel from the St. James Charge Room conducted an anti-crime exercise, where the officers proceeded to Western Main Road St James in the vicinity of Clarence Street. During the exercise, the officers intercepted a blue Hyundai Tucson driven by a 38-year-old welder, who resides in Diego Martin.

When the officers searched the said vehicle, they found 13 bales containing compressed marijuana. The man was arrested and taken to the St James Police Station, where the bales were weighed and totalled 334 kilogrammes, with a street value of $5.5 million.

ASP Russell coordinated the exercise, which was supervised by Ag. Sgt Linton and included PC David, PC Charles as well as PC Ali and PC Joseph from the Charge Room.

PC Charles is continuing enquiries.
