Protest Continues Over Security Concerns At Belmont Secondary

By Newsroom

Parents and students protested outside of the Belmont Secondary School on Friday morning over security concerns after two gunmen entered the compound through a compromised fencing one week ago.

PTA President Shurlanda Malcom calls for the fencing to be repaired as soon as possible, so classes can resume safely.

Teachers have also protested by staying away from the classroom.

In the Senate on Tuesday, Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby Dolly said since the incident, the number of MTS officers at the school was increased and there was also police presence on site.

“We are going to fix the (chainlink) fencing as is required and ensure that security presence is there to give presence to the pupils and teachers,” she said, adding that there was no need for teachers to refuse to work on the grounds of safety and security.
