Revenue Authority Bill Debated In Senate Today

By Newsroom

Debate on the Revenue Authority Bill of 2021 is currently underway in the Senate.

The bill seeks to establish an entity which will handle all assessment, collection, administration and enforcement of revenue laws, replacing the Board of Inland Revenue and the Customs and Excise Division.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has hinted that her party would challenge the Revenue Authority Bill should it be passed in the Parliament, saying “the Supreme Court is a guardian of the Constitution”.

While the United National Congress has said they will not support the bill as debate begins in the Senate, it is likely the proposed law could still be passed, as it requires only a simple majority note.

As mandated by Senate President Christine Kangaloo last Friday, unvaccinated Senators are required to be double masked as they participate in debate in the Upper House this morning.
