RIC Condemns Hostility At Public Consultations On Proposed Electricity Rate Increase

By Newsroom

The Regulated Industries Commission says it prematurely ended a public consultation on the proposed electricity rate increase last evening as a security measure for those present.

Police escorted RIC Chairman Dawn Callender and Executive Director Glen Khan, along with other board members off the stage at the Centre Point Mall in Chaguanas on Wednesday, after they were met with heavy opposition from those present.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the RIC says it stands firm in its belief in having a fair, equitable and transparent consultation process. However, the Commission says it will neither be intimidated, nor will it allow these sessions to descend into disorder, chaos and unsafe conditions.

“The RIC supports all citizens’ rights to share their views. However, the Commission strongly condemns the disruptive, inappropriate and threatening behaviour exhibited by the persons attending the consultation and the unprofessional behaviour of elected officials in attendance. When persons behave in a distruptive manner, it deprives other attendees of their opportunity to be heard,” the Commission said.

“The RIC remains determined to complete the public consultations as mandated by its constitutionally determined roles and its officials will not be intimidated by anyone. The RIC is dedicated to effectively and efficiently engaging with stakeholders on the T&TEC Price Review and hereby wishes to assure members of the public that additional steps, such as substantially reinforcing the presence of Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), will be taken to ensuring their safety,” it added.

Meanwhile, Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales  condemned the Opposition’s behavior at last evening’s RIC public consultation on proposed electricity rates, and called on leader Kamla Persad Bissessar to rein in her members.

Among the UNC MPs present were Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally, Princes Town MP Barry Padarath, Couva South MP Rudranath Indarsingh and MP for San Juan/Barataria, Saddam Hosein.
