Sean Luke’s Killers Sentenced…At Last

By Newsroom

The two men convicted of killing six year old Sean Luke, have both been handed their sentence.

Akeel Mitchell will serve a minimum sentence of 17 years, six months and 13 days at the court’s pleasure, while his accomplice, Richard Chatoo, received a sentence of 11 years, six months and 13 days, also at the court’s pleasure.

Their sentences will be reviewed by a judge every three years. The pair escaped the death penalty, granted they were minors when they carried out the dastardly act in 2006.

They were convicted of the crime back on July 23rd, with their sentencing postponed in one instance to allow their legal team and prosecutors to assess the prison’s bio-social report for both men.

As she handed down the  sentencing on Wednesday, High Court Judge Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds told the men: “You have a lot of work to do… May God have mercy on your souls.”

Justice Ramsumair-Hinds explained that  detention at the court’s pleasure did not operate as a “term of years,” and therefore was not an indication of when either will be released.

As for any chance of an early release, she said that would depend on the men’s conduct while in prison.
