SoE Extension Debate Goes To Parliament Today

By Newsroom

The Parliament breaks from recess for the House of Representatives to sit this afternoon, where a debate is to take place as government seeks to extend the current State of Emergency by a further three months.

The sitting begins at 1:30pm.

The government is likely to be successful in its quest to extend the State of Emergency until November, granted the legislation requires a simple majority vote, meaning Opposition votes aren’t needed for it to be passed.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar earlier this week told supporters her members would go into the debate “with an open mind” and listen to the justifications put forward by the government.

Still, the UNC has urged those passing by the Red House when the sitting begins, to honk their horns in protest of the extension.
