Spain and Italy face record spikes of the coronavirus as infections cross quarter of a million worldwide

Italy and Spain have recorded their biggest single-day death tolls from the coronavirus. This as the pandemic has infected more than 255,000 people worldwide and killed more than 10,400, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

In Germany’s 83 million citizens were warned they would be confined to their homes on Monday if they do mot behave responsibly this weekend. Europe’s governments have ramped their draconian restrictions to curb the coronavirus.

Officials in Rome today announced 5,986 new cases and a record 627 new deaths, raising the totals to 47,021 infections and 4,032 fatalities.

In Spain, the death toll rose to 1,002 an increase of 235 in 24 hours. The latest statistics showed 19,980 confirmed cases across the country with more than a third in Madrid.
