Suspended police officer detained after high speed chase

Police have detained a 28-year-old police officer who was recently suspended from duty. He was taken into custody as they investigate an incident where a firearm and ammunition were found after a high-speed chase yesterday, January 21.

“Around 5:40 pm on Friday 21st January, 2022, officers responded to a report of Transit Police Officers requesting assistance and in pursuit of a silver Nissan Tiida motor vehicle. The vehicle was reportedly proceeding in a westerly direction along the Priority Bus Route. Officers of the Port-of-Spain Task Force, San Juan CID and North Eastern Division Task Force assisted the Transit Police in pursuing the vehicle, which was eventually intercepted at Ali Drive, Aranguez, however, the occupants fled on foot,” according to a police statement on the incident.

The statement further indicated that the officers continued to search for the occupants of the vehicle, during which time the suspended police officer was discovered in some nearby bushes. Police also found a firearm and a quantity of ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were seized and the police officer was taken into custody. Insp. Baharat is continuing enquiries.
