The King Of Football, Pele, Is Laid To Rest

By Shirvan Williams

Football legend Pele has been laid to rest. His coffin was carried through the streets of Santos in Brazil, as thousands paid their final respects to the sporting icon.

The three-time World Cup winner was given a private burial and his casket was draped in a Brazilian flag. It was passed through the neighbourhood where Pele’s 100-year-old mother lives.

The former Santos FC star, whose given name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, died on Thursday aged 82, following a battle with colon cancer.

He is considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time, and has been buried in the Ecumenical Memorial Necropolis cemetery overlooking the Santos stadium.

His last wish was granted and he was buried on the ninth floor of a cemetery in his home city – in tribute to his father who wore the number 9 shirt as a player.
