Italy has just surpassed China for the most number of deaths related to coronavirus, making it the world’s deadliest center of the outbreak.

There are now over 10,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States. The huge jump in cases represents a doubling of figures over the last two days. Many states are now ramping up testing and the coronavirus sweeps across the country.

In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said earlier today that the state confirmed 1,769 new cases in the last day, bringing the number of confirmed cases in New York to 4,152 and pushing the total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the U.S. to 10,755, according to Johns Hopkins University. It has now killed at least 154 people in the U.S.

Meanwhile in Italy the number of deaths reached 3,405 today, the Italian Civil Protection Agency said at a news conference, which is 156 more than China’s toll, which, according to Johns Hopkins University, stands at 3,249.
The total number of cases in Italy rose to 41,035 with 5,322 new cases, officials added.

The disturbing figure comes hours after China marked a major milestone in the battle to limit the spread, reporting no new locally transmitted coronavirus cases for the first time since the pandemic began.
