Transport Minister Responds To Chief Secretary’s Claim About Government Withholding Info On Oil Spill

By Newsroom

Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan has denounced Chief Secretary Farley Augustine’s claim that central government is withholding information from the Tobago House of Assembly as it relates to last week’s oil spill.

Mr. Sinanan says the magnitude of this incident requires a united approach to ensure that this situation is well-managed in the best interest of all citizens.

“As Minister of Works and Transport, I commensurate with the frustration experienced by the Chief Secretary in holding the rightful perpetrators accountable for what is indeed an environmental and economic challenge for Trinidad and Tobago,” Minister Sinanan said in a statement on Thursday.

Recent satellite images show the oil slick, which originated from an overturned barge off the coast of Tobago, has spread about 100 kilometres west of the island and is now in Grenada’s southern marine area.

Government has called in top international maritime security investigators, I.R. Consilium, to help get to the bottom of the oil spill from a mysterious barge located off the coast of Tobago.

The US based firm are experts on downstream oil theft, smuggling and other illicit hydrocarbon activity.
