T&T Delegate Shines At Miss Universe In Scarlet Ibis Inspired Costume

By Newsroom

Faith Gillezeau wowed the crowd and judges at the Miss Universe competition in El Salvador last evening with her display of Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird, the Scarlet Ibis, in the costume category.

Gillezeau also made history as the first ever delegate to walk the stage “on stilts” which formed part of her costume.

In a video clip of her presentation posted to her official social media account, the 25-year-old beauty queen said: “I’ve tried to write this caption so many times and my words fail me. I can’t stop crying out of amazement. A moko jumbie far away from home on the @missuniverse stage. Can you believe that?”

The magnifient feathered design was created my wire artisan Douglas John, putting Gillezeau in the top five delegates in the costume category on Thursday night.

Of skill on the stilts, she said “Thank you to my stilt maker and instructor @juniorbisnath who custom made my stilts and worked with me consistently to ensure this idea could come to life safely and with the full respect and reverence for our culture it deserves. Thank you to @juniaregrello who had custom cases made when these same stilts wouldn’t fit in my luggage 2 days before. Leaving them behind wasn’t an option. Downgrading the dream to fit reality isn’t an option.”

Grateful for the support showered on her from home, the beauty queen said, “To the people of my Trinidad and Tobago who have opened their hearts to me and poured out only love and support, thank you. I set out on this journey of a lifetime with only the hope of making you proud.”

The finals of the Miss Universe competition will be held tomorrow night.
