Trinidad and Tobago has beat a previous record of nine Covid-19 deaths within a 24 hour period which was reported on Tuesday, with Wednesday’s update revealing 11 additional fatalities.

This is accompanied by new record high in daily cases being reported, as 615 more people have been confirmed as positive for having the virus.

The Ministry says this spike represents samples taken between May 7th to May 11th.

Active cases now stand at 4,588 as there have also been 94 recoveries. At this time there are 343 patients in hospital.

The Ministry of Health has revealed that positive cases now reflect a high percentage of infection within the population.

“The cases tested reflected a positivity rate in excess of 40%, which is a cause for significant concern. As such, the population is urged to follow all the personal health guidelines to avoid becoming infected or spreading the virus,” it urged.

“Persons in quarantine/isolation must stay at home at all times. Additionally, persons who are sick are urged to stay home, even if they are not officially under quarantine order.  We can and will overcome COVID-19 if we all work together and do our part. Wear your masks, Watch your distance and Wash your hands. We flattened the curve before and we can do it again,” it assured.

As it stands 60,585 people have received their first dose of the Astra Zeneca Covid-19 vaccine, while 1,179 others have  been fully vaccinated with a second dose.
