T&TEC Investigating Tuesday’s Wide Area Power Outage

By Newsroom

Preliminary investigations suggest that last night’s wide area power outage was because of a problem at one of T&TEC’s independent power producers, according to the Commission’s General Manager, Kelvin Ramsook.

The outage happened around 7pm.

Affected areas included Caparo to Mamoral, Piparo, Valsayn North, North Oropouche, Kelly Village and Glencoe.

Meanwhile,

Opposition MP Barry Padarath calls on the Regulated Industries Commission to take note of last night’s power outage, saying there should be no increase in electricity rates when citizens still have to grapple with unplanned cuts to their power supply.

Padarath reminded the RIC that part of their mandate is to assess the reliability of service, the quality of service and the dependability of service provided by service providers. He added that the frequency of nationwide blackouts were becoming more and more regular while the customer was the one being penalized and punished for a substandard service.

Padarath said that it was unacceptable for T&TEC’s General Manager to be in the dark as to what were the reasons Independent Power Producers were not operating at maximum capacity.
