T&T’s New Commissioner Of Police

By Newsroom

Trinidad and Tobago has a new Commissioner of Police.

MPs on both sides of the floor voted in favour of Erla Christopher in the House of Representatives on Friday afternoon, after debate on her nomination was piloted by the Prime Minister.

Ms. Christopher has been acting as Top Cop since December, after Mc Donald Jacob went on vacation and subsequently resigned from the TTPS last month.

Her name was submitted as the nominee for the post after topping the Merit List given to President Paula-Mae Weekes by the Police Service Commission on Monday.

As he piloted the debate, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said despite the fact that Police Commissioner Erla Christopher is due to retire later this year, the law allows for a two-year extension on the recommendation of the Cabinet.

Oropouche MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal, in responding to the Motion, questioned the extent of Ms. Christopher’s work on the frontline in crime-fighting since her career as an officer began in 1982.
