Sonny Beharrysingh and Sons and Paria Fuel Trading Company Limited (Paria) have extend condolences to the family of contractor, Shaquile Douglas, who died suddenly this morning at Paria’s facilities in Pointe a Pierre after complaining of feeling unwell.

According to a statement from Paria, at approximately 10:45am today (Friday, October 21), Paria’s Health, Safety and Environment department was informed that the contract employee of Sonny Beharrysingh and Sons, was working on a seven-foot scaffold structure at Paria’s facilities, when he asked to take a break from the work.

His colleagues, realising he was feeling unwell and in medical difficulty, contacted Paria’s HSE department. EMT officers were immediately summoned and operations at the site suspended. When the EMT officers examined Douglas, 28 years old, of Cleghorn Village, Princes Town, he was unresponsive.

All efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services and Global Medical Response of Trinidad & Tobago Limited (GMRTT) were also contacted and advised of the situation. When they arrived, the Fire Services also sought to revive Mr. Douglas but he remained unresponsive.

Paria’s EMT contacted the TTPS and the District Medical Officer (DMO) and at 1:10 pm, Mr. Douglas was pronounced dead. Paria’s General Manager, Mushtaq Mohammed along with the owner of Sonny Beharrysingh and Sons, met with Mr. Douglas’ relatives to extend condolences and to offer support to the family.

A distraught Beharrysingh said: “This is a very trying time for all of us, and our thoughts and
prayers go out to Shaquille’s family and his colleagues. This is a very sad day for all of us.”

Paria has offered EAP counselling services to both the family and the employees of the contractor company.
