Two Cases Of Teen Girls Becoming Pregnant While In Children’s Home, Authority Says

By Newsroom

Since its operationalization eight years ago, the Children’s Authority says it has reported two cases of teen girls becoming pregnant while in the care of children’s homes in this country.

The update follows a call from Opposition MP Barry Padarath for the Authority to release statistics of teen pregnancies in children’s homes.

In a statement last evening, the Authority said in both cases, its investigation determined that no staff member of the Homes was responsible for the girls becoming pregnant. The matters were reported to the Police, who are conducting their own investigation.

“The Authority wishes to advise the public that there are two Children’s Homes specifically designated for pregnant teens. It must be noted that the children were already pregnant when they were brought to the attention of the Authority for placement and the relevant Police reports were made at that time. While at these
Homes, the girls are provided with care and intervention to prepare them for motherhood,” it further clarified.
