Two Cops Charged with Misbehaviour in Public Office get Bail

Two police officers attached to the Eastern Division have each been granted bail in the sum of $250,000, with a surety, after they appeared before Magistrate Cheron Raphael at the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 20th April 2023.

According to a statement from the TTPS: No. 14865 Inspector Deyal Ramlakhan and No. 7762 Special Reserve Police Officer Cleon Smith were both charged with Misbehaviour in Public Office to wit: Corruptly Appropriating for Themselves, the sum of $12,297. It is alleged that the officers misappropriated sums of money seized as an exhibit in an ongoing matter.

They are expected to reappear in court on Tuesday 26th September 2023. On Wednesday 15th March 2023, a report was made to the Professional Standard Bureau (PSB) about the missing money. An investigation was conducted, which resulted in the arrest of the two officers. An audience was held with the Director of Public Prosecution Mr Roger Gaspard S.C. who advised that both men be jointly charged.

Charges were laid by Ag Insp Guy on Thursday 20th April 2023. Investigations were spearheaded by W/Senior Superintendent Martin, supervised by Superintendent Montrichard and included ASP Birch, Ag Inspector Guy and Ag Cpl Joefield.

Further to a viral social media video in which Police Officers allegedly seized cash at a business place, an investigation was launched by the Professional Standards Bureau which led to the arrest of nine officers on 14th April 2023. Seven of the officers have since been released, pending further investigations.
