US Congress Certifies Joe Biden’s Election Victory

By Newsroom

A violent day in the US Capitol on Wednesday delayed, but did not stop the US Congress from completing its certification of Joe Biden as the winner of the Presidential election.

Shortly before 5am on Thursday, the Congress finished counting the Electoral College votes which cemented the path for the President-Elect.

The process had been interrupted on Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building in an attempt to thwart the democratic process.

The certification clears the way for Mr Biden to be sworn in on 20 January.

In response, Mr Trump finally pledged an “orderly transition” of power.

President Trump has been suspended from Twitter and Facebook after tweeting to supporters who attacked the US Capitol.

In a social media message to protesters he said “I love you” before telling them to go home. He also repeated false claims about election fraud.

Twitter said it required the removal of three tweets for “severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy”. Meanwhile, Facebook banned Mr Trump for 24 hours. YouTube also removed the video.
