US Embassy Distances Itself From UNC Attempts To “Politicise” Travel Advisory

By Newsroom

On the heels of the Opposition’s attempt to blame a recent travel advisory issued by the United States Embassy on the failure of the Dr. Keith Rowley led government, the Embassy  condemned the act, calling it an attempt at politicisation.

The Opposition’s statement, penned by UNC PRO Kirk Meigoo,  claimed the areas listed in the advisory – including Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots and Corocite- were “criminal hotspots” which had been under the rule of the PNM for more than 65 years.

But the Embassy was swift to distance itself from the statements, saying: “The Department’s Travel Advisories are apolitical in nature, and in no way reflect our relationship with any country or with any specific political party within a country.”

It added: ” We recently adjusted our Travel Advisory system to give more weight to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Following this update, approximately 80% of countries worldwide have a Travel Advisory Level of 4: Do Not Travel.”
