Venezuelans, Cubans Arrested In Tobago

Six foreign nationals found to be in the country illegally, have been detained by Tobago Police.

Four Venezuelans and two Cubans were handed over to Immigration Division after they were discovered by officers of the Crown Point Police Station.

The Cubans who have been here since September 2019 were found on Wednesday at Bon Accord Developments.

The Venezuelans, who are thought to have entered the country after the closure of boarders, were apprehended on Gaskin Bay Road, Bon Accord.

Meanwhile, confirmation was made that a vessel with  32 Venezuelan nationals was intercepted on Wednesday morning.

Responding to a question on the matter at the virtual media conference, Chief Medical Office Dr. Roshan Parasram said while the matter was one for national security, the current pandemic dictates that the Venezuelans will have to be assessed.

“There was an interception of 32 Venezuelan nationals (I believe) which is a matter for really National Security, to be honest. The health component of it is really to do an assessment of those individuals to make sure they have no acute illnesses,” he said.

The CMO also cautioned that Coast Guard officials who were in contact with the Venezuelan nationals may need to be quarantined.

The Ministry of National Security has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
