Vote Counting Resumes in Guyana…with hiccups

By Newsroom

Counting of votes in Region Four resumed this morning on orders of the Chief Justice of Guyana  Roxane George- Wiltshire who handed down her court ruling yesterday.

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) reopened its Headquarters which also serves as the office for  Returning Officer Claremont Mingo.

GECOM  has allowed one person from each of the political parties that contested the poll on March 4th to observe the process. One observer from each of the missions from Caricom and the European Union will be allowed to witness the counting.

But there was a hiccup almost immediately when someone nominated by the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) complained that the Mr Mingoo was attempting to use a spreadsheet to table the votes cast instead of using the method called Statement of Poll.

The opposition was backed up by some of the smaller parties which also complained that some of the figures on the spreadsheet did not correspond.

GECOM remains cordoned off as journalists have been told to wait for just about 200  meters from the building.
