Zendaya Makes History, Wins Emmy For HBO Role

By Lillian Searles

24-year-old Zendaya Coleman, star of HBO’s “Euphoria”, made history on Sunday after she became the youngest person to win an Emmy award for best lead actress in a drama for her portrayal of teenage drug addict Rue in HBO’s Euphoria.

It was also only the second time in the awards’ seven-plus decade history that a Black woman won that category. The first was Viola Davis in 2015 for “How To Get Away With Murder.”

She was up against stiff competition with Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh, Ozark’s Laura Linney, The Crown’s Olivia Colman and The Morning Show’s Jennifer Aniston.

When she was announced as the winner, the actress and her family could be seen celebrating with joy over a videocall.

Celebrating her win for the HBO series “Euphoria”, Zendaya said that what was special about her character Rue is that she is a “full, whole human being” who is layered and complicated. “As the show goes on, we are also able to empathize with addiction, what it looks like, what it does to a family.”
